Max Goold and Amelie Sanders crowned new junior time trial national champions
Jan 8, 2025
Max Goold and Amelie Sanders have won the junior time trial national championships on the opening day of the 2025 AusCycling Road National Championships in Perth.
Blackburn Cycling Club's Goold avoided heartbreak by 5.41 seconds after crashing on the final corner of the 19.2 kilometres course.
The 17-year-old remounted and reached the finish line in 25 minutes and 11 seconds while pedalling with one leg, such was the Melburnian's mad rush to stop the clock.

Lucas Stevenson from Northern Sydney Cycling Club and Bahrain Victorious' under-19 development team (Cannibal B Victorious) finished in the silver medal position narrowly behind Goold.
Bronze was won by Fletcher Medway from Hamilton Wheelers Cycling Club, the younger brother of last year's under-23 time trial national champion Jackson, who finished 24.31 seconds behind Goold.
Goold said his near-catastrophe in the final corner was a result of not realising the turn cut back on itself.
"I locked it (the rear wheel) up and went sideways and then hit the deck," he said.
"Luckily my chain didn't drop and I could get back on.
"The win feels pretty good after last year, getting third in the road race. I thought I was in good form for this and I'm just super happy to get the win.
"Since Road Worlds in September last year I've solely looked at RoadNats, especially the TT, because I knew that I could actually go pretty good so coming into it I was pretty nervous because I had pressure on myself."
Sanders entered as the pre-race favourite in the junior women after recording top-five finishes across the time trial, criterium and road race in 2024.
The ARA Skip Capital rider delivered on expectations, winning by 10.28 seconds ahead of Georgia Gardiner (Canberra CC) and teammate Leani van der Berg (Norwood CC), who was 20.58 seconds adrift.
The Gold Coast talent led by a solitary second at the halfway point but dug deep to extend her winning margin by the finish.
"It was really tough but obviously I got the outcome I wanted," Sanders said.
"I didn't split that well so I was a bit worried by the end but I'm very glad to have come away with the win.
"This means a lot, I've had quite a few health-related hardships coming into this so I'm very glad all the hard work has paid off."
