RoadNats25: Para-cycling, Intellectually Impaired, Deaf and Transplant road race results

Jan 11, 2025

Australia's para-cycling, intellectually impaired, deaf and transplant riders were treated to another beautiful Perth morning at the 2025 AusCycling Road National Championships as 19 road race national championships were won.

The para-cycling, intellectually impaired, deaf and transplant road races had the honour of being the first to race on the 13.6-kilometre circuit that twists and turns through Kings Park and alongside spectacular waterfront views beside the Swan River.

18 of the 21 title winners completed the time trial and road race double, including Carol Cooke, who bid farewell to para-cycling and brought the curtain down on her illustrious career.

Two-time para-triathlon Paralympian David Bryant was another double national championship achiever, a feat made all the more sweeter by the fact the 35-year-old was able to achieve it on home roads.

"So special, no one is more passionate about what Perth has to offer from a scenario and cycling point of view," Bryant said.

"The time trial was about 300 metres from my doorstep and today I had to stretch it out to about a four-kilometre cruise from home.

"I'm just excited to see this event grow and I feel like in the next two years here when people see what Perth as to offer in terms of scenery and dynamics of the course that it's just going to be a huge event for the years to come and for me it's a chance to get a hit-out at this time of year in the lead-up to the triathlon season. I've loved every minute of it."

Perennial H4 national champion Alex Welsh echoed Bryant's sentiment of the Kings Park course.

"I'm very happy with the changes actually (moving to Perth). The time trial was good but I actually preferred the road race course, just having nice smooth rides and cutting laps through the city and having a nice view of the city at the finish was good.

"The climb was a nasty little pinch but then you had the rest of the course to look forward to."

The Brisbane-based Queensland Academy of Sport supported hand-cyclist won a UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup gold medal in the mixed team relay last year in Adelaide and said international racing would be his yearly targets once again.

"There's two world cups this year and then the world championships are in Belgium and that'd certainly be a target for sure," he said.
